Thankful to Still Have a Wife

Today Karen and I celebrate our 44th anniversary, one which we almost didn't get the chance to celebrate. This past Sunday I got one of those phone calls that you never expect to and hope you don't get. The first one I didn't answer because I didn't recognize the out-of-state phone number. The second one less than a minute later was my wife's number, but when I answered a man's voice on the other end surprised me. So shocked was I that I barely made out what he said about my wife being okay, but did make out that she had been in an accident on Interstate 75. So when I asked about her condition, he once again assured me that she was okay, and put her on the phone. By the time I listened to her explain she didn't know what happened, the ambulance had arrived, and I insisted she let them take her to the hospital.

Stefan and I left within thirty minutes and were on our way to London, Kentucky, a four and a half to five hour drive. We found her at the hospital, and before long they said they wanted to transfer her to Lexington to be observed there. Given the types of injuries, I agreed, and let them transport her while Stefan and I went to survey the damage, and collect whatever belongings were in the car. They didn't keep her at Lexington, and despite my better judgment we brought her home to Kokomo arriving very early in the morning.
I'm sure we've got lots of doctors appointments in our future, as well as a lot of recovery, but I'm blessed that tonight I still have a wife to take out to eat an anniversary meal.
